Season 6: Week 7

The Grassy Best Season 6

The Ponies of Death had a lot to answer for after defeating the Best on our home field last season, but the Grassies came ready to ask all the right questions. The Ponies played well, but the Best put on a flawless defensive performance to shut them out–if we played like this in the field every game, no one could beat us. Seriously, the defense was on fire this week. The offense knocked in the Grassy Ante of three runs, which was more than enough to claim victory. Ballsheviks, you’re next.

Season 6: Week 6

The Grassy Best, Season 6

After losses to Sofa King and Chuck Norris, The Grassy Best were looking to put a hurtin’ on somebody, and the Balls ‘n Dolls were the first hapless souls to wander into the Best’s path. The Grassy offense combined for 20 hits and 9 runs, a season-best effort, led by Quinn “The Professor” Saunders’s three-run double in the first inning. Gianni, Ben and Kevin proved they’re the best leadoff men in the league by each going 3-for-3, with four runs and three RKIs between them. In fact, everybody on the team got a hit (except for Cesar, who still drove in a run on a sacrifice fly). The Grassies are looking better than ever. I would not want to be the Ponies of Death next week.

Season 6: Week 5

The Grassy Best: Season 6

The Best suffered another tough loss in Week 5 to one of the league’s elite teams, Chuck Norris, who are apparently not elite enough to figure out how to use their own dugout, or how not to rip off their catchphrases from a played-out internet meme. The Grassies got off to an early lead, with leadoff men Gianni, Ben and Kevin all crossing the plate in the first inning, but from there the Best remained scoreless. It looked like the green team had it all sewn up until Chuck capitalized on a few Grassy defensive errors with four runs in the fourth inning. The Best loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but a…let’s call it “mishandled” bit of umpiring contributed to a scoreless final inning and much yelling. And I for one am not sorry at all for the latter.

After five games, here’s how the Grassy Power Rankings look:

(To be included in the GPR, a player must have a number of plate appearances equal to 60% of games. Right now, that number is 3. But Rob “Astroclyde” Clyde, with two at-kicks, has a 1.000 KA and OBP, and a 1.500 slugging percentage. One more game should put him in the rankings where he belongs.)

The Grassy Best lost their first game of the season to archrivals Sofa King Good in Week 4, ending both our winning streak and our no-runs-allowed streak. Grassies Over-Achieve Lebowski 5-2

Though I missed the game, I heard much regaling at the bar afterwards. The team stuck it to longtime rival Little Lebowski with a dominant 5-2 performance against a top team. The win now evens out the historical matchup against Lebowski to 2-2-1 lifetime.

Big play came from MVG Cesar “The Enabler” Cervera who added another RKI to his totals in a 2-2 performance and helped turn a game-saving double-play to end the last inning. “The Professor” Quinn Saunders also had a dominant performance with a 2 run triple and “The Cuddler” proved he was one of the league’s best catchers by retring countless Lebowskis at the plate. “FLF” also had a strong game with  a 2-2 performance and a big catch in the outfield. “The Commuter” aka “Papel-John” recorded another save and made another strong statement to the league that he is the top closer in H-Wood.

The bad news of the game though came when Linehan was injured while running to first. He’s a top rookie prospect so this could be a devastating loss if it turns out to be a long-term injury. More to come on that.

Big game for Team G, way to go boys and girls!

Grassies Muck Up The Fother Muckers 4-0

In shutout fashion, The Grassy Machine toppled the trash-talking brats of The Fother Muckers in a 4-0 win. The Fothers threw some good pitching at Team Green but could not plate any runners and would allow 4 Grassies to cross. Not as much fun as it should have been giving we were playing adult kickball, but a good game nonetheless.

Grassies soothe Fred Savage beasts 12-3

Monday was a record-breaking night that would see The Grassholes topple their previous runs-total high (10-0, against The Ponies of Death in season 3) in come-from-behind fashion against skilled league-newcomers, The Fred Savages. The Savages came out of the gate strong, lighting A-Train up for 3 in the bottom of the 1st and holding the newly formed Grassy Offensive Behemoth to only 1 run through the 1st two. But the Grassies would rally in the third, led by a 3 run homer from Corey “The Lieutenant” Harris. Corey would later tack on another two RKIs in a dominant performance (his first as a Grassy and it was his birthday!). Only four girls could make it to the game, but they were all en fuego; Jackie Chu exhibited serious speed and scored on a heads-up play. Pamther scored on a suicide squeeze as did Gianni; their plays would avenge the pitfalls suffered by HazMatt and A-Train in similar situations.

Gianni also recorded a save and a foulout after pitching 4 scoreless innings. The funny thing is that he had just pitched 5 shutout innings hours before in a different league!!! Sammy “Sosa” Levassar also made Grassy history going 3-3 with 3 runs scored!

The strong play of our new free agents has not gone unnoticed as all three of them are league-leaders in all the important statistics. Levassar has 4 runs, the most in the league through two games. Corey has 1 HR, tied for the lead with 4 other players but in only half the games! Corey also has 5 RKI, one shy of the highmark set by Lebowski’s Todd Harty. Gianni trails only Chuck Norris’s ace, Brandon Paialii in pitching stats though he has spent less time on the mound and has a better RAA.

Big play also came from the usual suspects and notably from Rob “Astroclyde” Clyde who has double his production from last season.

Grassies take Season Opener 4-2 against The Awesome Awesomes

Offense came from many different players throughout the lineup, whereas our opponents had to rely on their exceptionally fast lead-off guy for their only scores. Errors sprung up on both sides of the ball, but The Grassies were able to take better advantage of the Game 1 rust by plating just a couple more than the opponent. The freshman class looked particularly strong. It didn’t get mentioned in the game recap I submitted to the newsletter, but Alissa (The Grassy Knoll) made the defensive play of the game, saving what looked like a surefire run with a smart play. As the comraderie develops, I think we can expect bigger and better things from G-Town. Viva Los Grassies!
